  • IMPORTANT NOTE: Although the title of this show may appeal to a family oriented audience, don't let it mislead you into thinking that this production is only for young performers. The version of "A Year With Frog and Toad" that we are producing is typically performed by professional adult actors, and with the level of dancing and singing that we intend to have in this show, we will definitely be looking for experienced teens to be cast in the larger roles. As much of our focus will be on acting exercises, character development, and dance workshops, the process will be beneficial for all of the performers cast no matter what their experience level is. We are very excited to announce that this will be the first MADA show where we will offer workshops in vocal stylings, dance, and acting which will be held outside of the already scheduled rehearsal process for cast members only! You don't want to miss out! So, get ready for a challenge and come have some fun with our version of "A Year With Frog and Toad"!
  • Prepare 32 bars of an uptempo musical theater song exhibiting vocal range and character. (If the performers in the 6-8 years-old age bracket don't have sheet music for a song, they can sing either "Happy Birthday" or  "Twinkle Little Star.")
  • An accompanist will be provided, please bring sheet music in the correct key. Acapella singing and CD tracks (that include vocals) are not acceptable and will not be heard.
  • Performers aged 9-19 years-old should be prepared to dance and read from the script. Bring Tap shoes if you have them as you may be asked to do a tap combo.

Book and Lyrics by  Willie Reale
Music by  Robert Reale
Based on the books by  Arnold Lobel

Two Acts, Book Musical
Original Broadway Version

Arnold Lobel's well-loved characters hop from the page to the stage in Robert and Willie Reale's musical A Year With Frog And Toad. Conceived by Mr. Lobel's daughter, Adrianne Lobel, A Year With Frog And Toad remains true to the spirit of the original stories as it follows two great friends, the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad through four fun-filled seasons. Waking from hibernation in the spring, they proceed to plant gardens, swim, rake leaves and go sledding, learning life lessons along the way, including a most important one about friendship and rejoicing in the attributes that make each of us different and special. AUDITIONS: A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD Photo 4

* These characters are big, bold FUN characters. Use total creative freedom when auditioning!  Tap into your “animal” side and have FUN!!!!!

Frog – A happy go-lucky character!  Frog is the most optimistic character you will ever meet.  He is popular, kind, caring, spunky and full of life!  Frog is ready to do or go anywhere at any time, he is always on the move.  Role could be played by either a male or female of any age but the actor must have a strong sense of physical movement.   While Toad is slower, Frog is always moving!  We see a broad range of acting in the number “Alone”.  It is a very vulnerable side of Frog.   MUST be a very strong actor, singer and dancer (must tap!). Voice: light, pleasant baritone. However, one song sits around high G#
and A.

Toad – The complete opposite of Frog.  He is a grumpy sort of character. Toad looks at the glass half empty.  You really feel for this character.  While his best friend, Frog, is upbeat and cheerful, Toad feels nothing goes his way. He must have very strong acting skills as he carries many numbers in the show and shows a broad range of emotions.  MUST be a very strong actor, singer, dancer (must tap!). Voice: Character voice, but pleasant. Mid-range but also needs to be comfortable with high E on staff. Ideally, Frog and Toad would have contrasting vocal color-type.

Birds - The birds act as the narrators of the show.  They illustrate, through song, the passage of the 4 seasons.  The Birds MUST very skilled singers.  They must be able to handle difficult harmonies.  Almost everything is sung in 3 part harmony. Must move well. Voice: Must be secure in close part singing. Alto: Low F. Highest voice, mid-range but also high F on staff.

Snail – The Snail sings one of the show's biggest numbers “I’m Coming Out of my Shell”  Must be capable of transforming from a shy, withdrawn, nervous character to big and brassy when performing “I’m Coming Out of my Shell”.  Strong singing and dancing a MUST. Voice: rich, bluesey, show-stopping middle but with a high G#. Also
C&W high A.

Turtle – is VERY vain!  She is manipulative, conniving and thinks she is better than all the other animals.  She is mean to Toad and is clearly the ringleader of the other animals.  Strong singer and Actress a must! Voice: mid-range, close harmony.

Mouse- is Turtle’s best friend.  She goes along with anything Turtle says.  Mouse is actually quite smart, but nobody notices!  This role could be played by either a male or female of any age.  The actor must be a strong singer, dancer, actor.  Voice: Mid-range. Harmony. (Could double as Mother Frog)

Lizard – Lizard is a “dude”.  A skateboarding, surfer (thinks he’s cool) character.  Think  “Crush” the turtle in Finding Nemo.  He pals around with Turtle and Mouse even though Turtle abuses him.  Must sing, dance and be a strong actor. Voice: Tenor in 3-part trio with Mouse and Turtle. (Could double as Father Frog)

Young Frog- The Young Frog is a very small male frog who plays Frog in a Halloween flashback. This is a nice featured role! Must Sing!

Father Frog –He is also in the Halloween Flashback.  He  is REALLY overdramatic in the number SHIVERS!  Very good comedy a MUST!  Strong character actor and singer! Voice: Tenor (A).

Mother Frog –She is also in the Halloween Flashback.  She is REALLY overdramatic in the number SHIVERS!  Very good comedy a MUST!  Strong character actor and singer! Voice: High range (A).

LARGE and TERRIBLE Frog – A very BIG AND SCARY character.  He is in the Halloween Flashback number SHIVERS.

Squirrel 1 & 2 – Mischievous, fast and playful.  These characters must sing, dance (tap dance is a plus!) and have strong physical comedy.

Moles – Have a cute bit in the Winter section of the show.  Must sing!

Seeds, Baby Bird, Squirrels, Fish, Snail B-up dancers, Bees, Snowflakes etc. – These are other animals/roles that will appear throughout the show.
